Benjamin B. Wild, P.E.

Principal Boston Office

Mr. Wild specializes in structural engineering projects for the healthcare and laboratory market sectors. A member of Boston’s McNamara Salvia team for more than 15 years, Ben combines engineering expertise with past experience as a self-performing residential developer. This skill set has afforded Ben a unique perspective that allows him to balance the objectives of the designers, ownership group, and construction team to achieve a unified goal. Ben has a keen understanding of challenges in the healthcare and biotechnology industries including ever-evolving technologies, decant and user group coordination, expansion of older inefficient buildings to accommodate new state-of-the-art facilities, and the need to keep mission-critical facilities operational during construction. In addressing these challenges, Ben encourages ‘smart’ co-location for complex projects with our team assuming an active role in defining a project’s Lean design goals.

“We take pride in not only listening to our clients, but in understanding the business that they are in. We believe this fosters a collaborative environment with the owner and design team resulting in a cost effective and highly tailored end product.”

Designed to span Stuart Street in Boston’s Back Bay, this second-story Liberty Mutual Pedestrian Bridge provides a weatherproof crossing for employees between buildings. This 90-foot clear span pedestrian bridge includes design features such as suspension cables, a shallow arch structure and walls created with structural glazing. The original design was modeled after the bridge in Boston’s Public Garden, paying homage to the neighborhood.
The Hale Family Building at Boston Children’s Hospital is an 11-story cutting-edge facility and the largest project in the hospital’s history. Four stories reside below-grade in the 595,000 SF building that now boasts a state-of-the-art NICU, a five-story Heart Center, 150 single-patient rooms, and 16 ORs with flexible layouts. The design incorporates gardens residing on the rooftop, ground level, and throughout interior spaces to create 28,000 SF of greenspace for patients, family, and staff to heal and respite.
Located on the waterfront in Boston’s Charlestown Navy Yard sits the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. The 10-story, 132-bed teaching hospital has a façade consisting of brick, curtainwall, storefront and architectural paneling. Due to the hospital occupancy and exposure to the open ocean, larger than normal seismic and wind forces were considered and presented a unique challenge to the designers. Renovation of the wharf, alternative energy sources and green roofs are certain elements of the LEED Gold hospital. As a state of the art rehabilitation facility, patients are exposed to treatments utilizing resistance pools, full size lap pools, gymnasiums, healing gardens and the highly renowned Gait Lab.
Big SNOW America at American Dream is not only the first indoor ski and snowboard slope in North America, but also the only one in the Western Hemisphere. The 180,000 SF park features an 800-foot, 16-story slope that is open 365 days a year. It is complete with a chairlift, small terrain park, ski school area and other aspects you would find at a ski resort like a chalet, après lounge and various shops and restaurants. Other features of Big SNOW America include an ice climbing wall and an ice skating rink. The facility utilizes the same snowmaking process as a typical mountain would, except melted water is able to be recycled and reused in the snowmaking system.
