Located on the waterfront in Boston’s Charlestown Navy Yard sits the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. The 10-story, 132-bed teaching hospital has a façade consisting of brick, curtainwall, storefront and architectural paneling. Due to the hospital occupancy and exposure to the open ocean, larger than normal seismic and wind forces were considered and presented a unique challenge to the designers. Renovation of the wharf, alternative energy sources and green roofs are certain elements of the LEED Gold hospital. As a state of the art rehabilitation facility, patients are exposed to treatments utilizing resistance pools, full size lap pools, gymnasiums, healing gardens and the highly renowned Gait Lab.
