McNamara Salvia’s work at New England Biolab’s Ipswich campus began over twenty years ago with their original 208,000 SF main building and has continued throughout the years. In addition to previous smaller renovations, we designed their most recent Garden Expansion project. This expansion consisted of a 160,000 SF copper-clad, biomedical facility that connects to the original building and further supports increased manufacturing and research capacity. The five-story composite steel structure, with one-story of below-grade parking, is positioned strategically on the hillside site to preserve massive, old-growth copper beech trees. The unbalanced soil loading of the hillside on the basement walls required a creative lateral load-supporting solution in the foundations.
