The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory underwent a multi-year phased construction and interior renovation at its Cambridge Headquarters. The first completed phase was a 20,000 SF glass atrium featuring a new entry, public exhibits, a cafeteria and meeting space and also connects three wings of the existing building through new communicating stairs and a bridge spanning over the space below. It is constructed out of steel HSS trusses and bent frames to support the glass façade and roof. The second phase included 250,000 SF of renovations to the building’s office and laboratory spaces, including a new Model-Based Engineering (MBE) lab. The newly renovated Lab increases efficiency, collaboration and presents a new face to the community.
